Shadow work prompts for purpose: The Call

Shadow work prompts for purpose ask what you would build or become if failure and judgment disappeared, and what you keep almost doing without landing on it. The unlived life is part of the shadow too: the decision you have already made but not admitted, the conversation you have rehearsed and never had, the permission you are still waiting for.

What is The Call for?

In Soul Arc, The Call is one of 12 prompt themes. The app describes it as "Purpose, power & the unlived life". It is carried by the The Seeker archetype, which means that if the quiz places you there, the first of your daily prompts comes from this theme.

Not everything in the shadow is dark. Jung wrote that the shadow also holds good qualities, and the clearest example is the life you are not living: the ambition you downplay, the thing you circle, the wish you keep for a future version of yourself who finally feels ready. The Call theme is about that material. It tends to feel lighter than other themes and to land harder.

The prompts ask about permission and postponement. Who gave you permission to want the life you want, and why do you still need it? What are you staying busy with to avoid something that matters more? What decision have you already made? Most people find that the answer to the last one is already sitting there, waiting to be written down.

This is a good theme to end a run of shadow work with. After the wound, the rage, and the grief, this is the question of what you will do with what you found.

Eight shadow work prompts for purpose and the unlived life

These 8 prompts are quoted word for word from the Soul Arc app. They are in the order the app keeps them.

These are 8 of the 12 prompts in The Call. The app has all 12, and 144 prompts across 12 themes. On the free plan you get 3 new prompts a day. Soul Arc Pro opens all of them, with a picker by archetype or theme. See the FAQ for what Pro costs.

How should you use these prompts?

New to this? Start with what shadow work is, and end every session on purpose with the closing routine. The full set of 144 shadow work prompts covers the other 11 themes.

What does a good answer look like?

Prompt: What decision have you already made but not yet admitted to yourself?

Entry: "That I'm moving back to the coast. I've been 'thinking about it' for two years, and I've already looked at schools for the kids and I know which town. I just haven't said it to my husband because once I say it, it's a plan and the plan can fail."

Umbra might ask: "What happens to the decision while it stays unsaid?"

Umbra, the companion inside Soul Arc, answers with one question that points back to your own words. It never gives advice, and it never tells you what your entry means.

Which archetype carries The Call?

In the app, each of the 12 archetypes carries one theme. The Call belongs to The Seeker. The app sums that archetype up in one line:

You are always searching for something deeper

Its light and shadow traits, and three of these prompts, are on the archetype's own page. An archetype counts as mastered after 5 of its prompts.

What if a prompt brings up too much?

This theme is lighter than most, but admitting a want can bring grief for the years it waited. If that lands hard, let it. If you find the unlived life has become a reason to tear down the one you have, slow down, and talk it through with someone you trust before you decide anything.

These prompts are for self-reflection, not therapy. If you are thinking about harming yourself, reach a person now. In the US, call or text 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline), or text HOME to 741741 (Crisis Text Line).

Questions people ask

Is purpose a shadow work topic?

Yes. The unlived life is shadow material: the wants and ambitions you pushed aside to be acceptable or safe. Jung noted that the shadow holds good qualities as well as unwanted ones.

What if I do not know what I want?

Start with what you keep almost doing, or what you are always too busy for. Wants hide in those places. You do not need a purpose. You need the next honest sentence.

Should I act on what I write here?

Not in the session. Write it, close the journal, and look again in a few days. A want that survives a few days of daylight is worth planning around.

Which archetype in Soul Arc carries The Call?

The Seeker. If the quiz places you there, the first of your 3 daily prompts on the free plan comes from this theme. Its light and shadow traits are on its own page.
