Jungian archetypes, and the 12 in Soul Arc

Jungian archetypes are shared patterns of character and story that Carl Jung believed live in every person's unconscious, such as the Shadow, the Persona, and the Self. Soul Arc uses its own set of 12 archetypes, inspired by that idea, to describe how you tend to protect yourself.

What did Jung mean by an archetype?

Jung noticed that the same figures and stories keep turning up in myths, dreams, and religions that never had contact with each other. He proposed that people share a deep layer of the mind, which he called the collective unconscious, and that it is organized around recurring patterns. He called those patterns archetypes.

An archetype is not a personality type. It is a pattern any person can fall into.

Which archetypes did Jung describe?

Jung never published a fixed list. These are the ones he wrote about most:

ArchetypeIn plain words
The SelfThe whole person, conscious and unconscious together. The center Jung thought people grow toward.
The ShadowThe parts of yourself you reject and hide. This is what shadow work looks at.
The PersonaThe mask you wear for other people.
The Anima and AnimusThe inner image of the other sex that Jung believed each person carries.
Recurring figuresThe Mother, the Child, the Wise Old Man, the Hero, the Trickster.

Are there 12 Jungian archetypes?

Not according to Jung. The well-known lists of 12 come from Carol S. Pearson: first Awakening the Heroes Within (1991), then The Hero and the Outlaw (2001), which she wrote with Margaret Mark. The second book is where names like the Hero, the Sage, the Caregiver, and the Outlaw come from. Both build on Jung's idea, but neither list is his.

What are the 12 archetypes in Soul Arc?

Soul Arc's archetypes are its own. They are not Jung's list and not Pearson's. Each one names a way a person learned to protect themselves, and each has a light side and a shadow side. The names, descriptions, and traits below are quoted from the app.

How does Soul Arc choose your archetype?

With a 10-question quiz when you first open the app. 8 questions are the same for everyone. The last 2 are picked from a set of 4, based on your earlier answers.

Each answer adds to 9 underlying patterns, such as withdrawal, control, and self-erasure. Your scores are then compared with a profile for each archetype, and the closest match is yours.

The first question, word for word: "When someone gets too close, what do you do first?"

The quiz is a reflection tool. It is not a validated psychological test, and it does not diagnose anything.

What does your archetype change in the app?

Questions people ask

How many Jungian archetypes are there?

Jung never set a number. He wrote most about the Self, the Shadow, the Persona, and the Anima and Animus, and he treated figures like the Hero and the Trickster as archetypes too. Lists of 12 come from later writers, mainly Carol S. Pearson.

Are Soul Arc's archetypes the same as Jung's?

No. They are Soul Arc's own set of 12, inspired by Jung's idea that people share common inner patterns. The Shadow Self is the closest to one of Jung's own archetypes.

Is the archetype quiz a personality test?

It is a reflection tool, not a validated psychological test, and it does not diagnose anything. Treat the result as a starting point for writing.

Can I have more than one archetype?

The quiz gives you the one closest match. After you complete all 15 planets in the app, you can choose other archetypes to explore.
