Shadow work prompts for the persona: The Mask
Shadow work prompts for the persona ask about the gap between the self you present and the self you are when no one is watching. The persona is not a lie. It is a useful face for the world. Trouble starts when it stops coming off, and you lose track of which one is you.
Updated October 2026What is The Mask for?
In Soul Arc, The Mask is one of 12 prompt themes. The app describes it as "Persona, performance & identity". It is carried by the The Mirror archetype, which means that if the quiz places you there, the first of your daily prompts comes from this theme.
Jung called the face we show the world the persona, after the masks worn in ancient theater. Everyone has one, and everyone needs one. The persona gets you through a job interview and a family dinner. The shadow work question is not whether you wear a mask but what you have put behind it, and what it costs to keep it there.
The Mask theme looks at performance: the version of you that walks into a room, the feelings you translate into something more acceptable, the parts you edit out before speaking. The prompts are specific, which is what makes them useful. 'What mask do you wear at work' is answerable in a way that 'who am I really' is not.
Expect the answers to be a little embarrassing. The gap between the performance and the person is where shame tends to live, and shame is quiet. If you catch yourself writing a polished answer, that is the mask again. Write the unpolished one underneath it.
Eight shadow work prompts for the persona
These 8 prompts are quoted word for word from the Soul Arc app. They are in the order the app keeps them.
- What version of yourself do you put on before a room? What happens if you forget?
- Who has never seen you fall apart? What would happen if they did?
- What do you edit out of yourself before speaking in most conversations?
- Whose idea of 'having it together' are you exhausting yourself trying to meet?
- What would you stop doing tomorrow if no one were watching and no one would know?
- If the people who love you saw you at 2am alone, would they recognize you?
- What mask do you wear at work that has started to feel like your face?
- What do you want people to think of you? What are you terrified they actually see?
These are 8 of the 12 prompts in The Mask. The app has all 12, and 144 prompts across 12 themes. On the free plan you get 3 new prompts a day. Soul Arc Pro opens all of them, with a picker by archetype or theme. See the FAQ for what Pro costs.
How should you use these prompts?
- Choose a specific setting for each prompt: work, your family, a particular friend. The mask changes by room.
- Write what you actually said or did, then what you edited out. The edit is the entry.
- Notice compliments. The ones that land wrong often praise the performance rather than the person.
- Do not try to take the mask off. The goal is to know it is there and what it is protecting.
- One prompt per session, with a timer. These questions tend to spread into every area of life if you let them.
New to this? Start with what shadow work is, and end every session on purpose with the closing routine. The full set of 144 shadow work prompts covers the other 11 themes.
What does a good answer look like?
Prompt: What do you edit out of yourself before speaking in most conversations?
Entry: "Enthusiasm. I love things loudly on my own and then in company I go flat and ironic. Yesterday someone asked about the show I've been obsessed with and I said 'it's fine.' I think I learned that caring a lot is embarrassing. I have no idea when."
Umbra might ask: "What happened the last time you let someone see you care?"
Umbra, the companion inside Soul Arc, answers with one question that points back to your own words. It never gives advice, and it never tells you what your entry means.
Which archetype carries The Mask?
In the app, each of the 12 archetypes carries one theme. The Mask belongs to The Mirror. The app sums that archetype up in one line:
You reflect the world around you more than yourself
Its light and shadow traits, and three of these prompts, are on the archetype's own page. An archetype counts as mastered after 5 of its prompts.
What if a prompt brings up too much?
Mask prompts are usually lighter than the childhood or grief themes, but they can land on shame quickly. If an entry leaves you feeling exposed, close the session on purpose, do something ordinary, and come back another day. Nothing on this page needs to be finished today.
These prompts are for self-reflection, not therapy. If you are thinking about harming yourself, reach a person now. In the US, call or text 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline), or text HOME to 741741 (Crisis Text Line).
Questions people ask
What is the persona in shadow work?
The persona is Jung's word for the face you show the world, the role that helps you fit in. In shadow work it matters because whatever does not fit the persona tends to get pushed into the shadow.
Is it bad to have a persona?
No. Everyone has one and needs one. The problem is a persona you cannot take off, or one so tight that the real reactions have nowhere to go but sideways.
How do I know what my mask is?
Ask who has never seen you fall apart, and what you do in front of them. The mask is whatever you do differently in that room.
Which archetype in Soul Arc carries The Mask?
The Mirror. If the quiz places you there, the first of your 3 daily prompts on the free plan comes from this theme. Its light and shadow traits are on its own page.
