Shadow work prompts for control: The Grip
Shadow work prompts for control ask what you are holding so tightly that you cannot feel anything else. Control, perfectionism, and planning are not flaws. They are strategies, usually learned early, for making an unsafe world feel manageable. These prompts look at what the strategy is protecting you from and what it costs now.
Updated October 2026What is The Grip for?
In Soul Arc, The Grip is one of 12 prompt themes. The app describes it as "Control, fear & perfectionism". It is carried by the The Architect archetype, which means that if the quiz places you there, the first of your daily prompts comes from this theme.
People who control a lot rarely think of themselves as controlling. They think of themselves as responsible, careful, and good at their jobs, which is often also true. The shadow is in the fear underneath: the belief, usually unspoken, that if you let go of the plan something terrible will happen. The Grip theme goes to that belief and asks who taught it to you.
Perfectionism gets its own prompts here, because it is control pointed at yourself. The prompt about perfecting something to avoid finishing it, because finished things can be judged, is a good first one. If you have a project that is always almost done, start there.
The prompts do not ask you to stop planning. They ask what you would have to feel if you stopped for an hour. That feeling is the subject.
Eight shadow work prompts for control and perfectionism
These 8 prompts are quoted word for word from the Soul Arc app. They are in the order the app keeps them.
- What are you controlling that is really anxiety about what you can't control?
- Who taught you control was the same as safety? Were they right?
- What would you have to feel if you stopped optimizing and just sat still?
- What are you perfecting to avoid finishing, because finished things can be judged?
- Where is your need for certainty costing you more than uncertainty would?
- What are you holding so tightly that you can't feel anything else?
- What rule are you following that no one is enforcing anymore?
- What imperfection are you hiding that you're convinced would disqualify you if anyone saw it?
These are 8 of the 12 prompts in The Grip. The app has all 12, and 144 prompts across 12 themes. On the free plan you get 3 new prompts a day. Soul Arc Pro opens all of them, with a picker by archetype or theme. See the FAQ for what Pro costs.
How should you use these prompts?
- Pick one thing you are currently managing tightly: a project, a person, a routine. Not your whole life.
- Write the worst case you are guarding against, in full, as if it happened. Then write what you would actually do.
- Look for rules nobody enforces. 'I have to answer within the hour' is a rule. Who made it?
- Notice the body. Control usually lives in held breath and tight shoulders.
- Try one small release during the week, on purpose, and write about what it felt like. That entry is often the most useful one.
New to this? Start with what shadow work is, and end every session on purpose with the closing routine. The full set of 144 shadow work prompts covers the other 11 themes.
What does a good answer look like?
Prompt: What are you perfecting to avoid finishing, because finished things can be judged?
Entry: "The portfolio site. Two years. Every time it's nearly ready I decide the typography is wrong, or I need one more project. If I publish it, someone could look and think it's average. While it's unfinished it's still potentially great."
Umbra might ask: "What would you lose if it turned out to be average?"
Umbra, the companion inside Soul Arc, answers with one question that points back to your own words. It never gives advice, and it never tells you what your entry means.
Which archetype carries The Grip?
In the app, each of the 12 archetypes carries one theme. The Grip belongs to The Architect. The app sums that archetype up in one line:
You design your life around control for a reason
Its light and shadow traits, and three of these prompts, are on the archetype's own page. An archetype counts as mastered after 5 of its prompts.
What if a prompt brings up too much?
Control prompts can surface the fear the control was hiding, which can feel like a sudden spike of anxiety. If that happens, do something physical and finite: a walk around the block, a load of laundry. If the anxiety is constant or stops you from functioning, bring it to a licensed therapist. Soul Arc is not a substitute for that.
These prompts are for self-reflection, not therapy. If you are thinking about harming yourself, reach a person now. In the US, call or text 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline), or text HOME to 741741 (Crisis Text Line).
Questions people ask
Is perfectionism part of the shadow?
The fear underneath it is. Perfectionism is a visible habit; the belief that you will be judged and found wanting is the part that stays hidden. These prompts go to the belief.
Are these prompts about anxiety?
They are about the way control is often a response to anxiety about what cannot be controlled. They are self-reflection prompts, not an assessment. If anxiety is affecting your daily life, see a licensed professional.
What if I like being in control?
Good. Nothing here asks you to give it up. The question is what it costs and where it has stopped serving you, which only you can judge.
Which archetype in Soul Arc carries The Grip?
The Architect. If the quiz places you there, the first of your 3 daily prompts on the free plan comes from this theme. Its light and shadow traits are on its own page.
