Shadow work prompts for change: The Crossing
Shadow work prompts for change ask what you are still defending that you have already outgrown, and who you are becoming while you cling to who you were. Transitions have a shadow: the identity that is ending, the loyalty that is costing you, the grief for a self you have not properly mourned. These prompts are for the middle of that.
Updated October 2026What is The Crossing for?
In Soul Arc, The Crossing is one of 12 prompt themes. The app describes it as "Transformation & who you are becoming". It is carried by the The Alchemist archetype, which means that if the quiz places you there, the first of your daily prompts comes from this theme.
Every real change ends something. A job you leave, a belief you drop, a role in your family you stop playing. Most people rush through that ending because it feels like failure, and then wonder why the new chapter feels hollow. The Crossing theme slows the ending down enough to see what is actually ending and what it is asking you to carry forward.
The prompts here are about identity rather than events. Not 'what happened' but 'what are you clinging to because releasing it would end a chapter.' Some ask who you were before the last thing that broke you. Some ask about the unlived life trying to get your attention. One asks what gift is hiding inside the thing you most dislike about yourself, which is a question for the end of a crossing, not the start.
This theme is good for anyone in a transition they did not fully choose: a breakup, a layoff, an illness in the family, a move. The prompts do not fix the transition. They stop it from being only a loss.
Eight shadow work prompts for change and becoming
These 8 prompts are quoted word for word from the Soul Arc app. They are in the order the app keeps them.
- What are you still defending that you have actually already outgrown?
- What would the person you're becoming say to the person you are now?
- What identity are you clinging to because releasing it would end a chapter?
- What would you grieve if you stepped fully into the life now available to you?
- What old loyalty is costing you your future?
- Who were you before the last thing that broke you? What parts do you want to bring forward?
- What unlived life is trying to get your attention?
- What gift is hiding inside the thing you most dislike about yourself?
These are 8 of the 12 prompts in The Crossing. The app has all 12, and 144 prompts across 12 themes. On the free plan you get 3 new prompts a day. Soul Arc Pro opens all of them, with a picker by archetype or theme. See the FAQ for what Pro costs.
How should you use these prompts?
- Name the chapter that is ending, in one line, as if it were a book title. Then write what you will miss about it.
- Look for old loyalties. 'I am the one who stays' or 'we don't do that in our family' are loyalties, and they have a price.
- Write to your future self and from your future self. Both directions tell you something.
- Expect grief. A change you wanted still ends something. Give it an entry.
- Do not force a conclusion about who you are becoming. Crossings are finished later than they feel.

What does a good answer look like?
Prompt: What are you still defending that you have actually already outgrown?
Entry: "Being the fun one. My friends still expect me to organize the big nights out, and I still do it, and I've been quietly hating it for a year. I'm 34 and I want to be home by ten. If I say that, I'm not sure what I am to them."
Umbra might ask: "What are you to them when you are not organizing anything?"
Umbra, the companion inside Soul Arc, answers with one question that points back to your own words. It never gives advice, and it never tells you what your entry means.
Which archetype carries The Crossing?
In the app, each of the 12 archetypes carries one theme. The Crossing belongs to The Alchemist. The app sums that archetype up in one line:
You transform pain into power without realizing it
Its light and shadow traits, and three of these prompts, are on the archetype's own page. An archetype counts as mastered after 5 of its prompts.
What if a prompt brings up too much?
Transitions can bring up grief that surprises you, including for things you wanted to leave. If an entry turns heavy, stop and let it be grief rather than a problem to solve. If the change involves a loss that is recent or large, or you are not functioning day to day, a licensed therapist can help you carry it. A journal cannot.
These prompts are for self-reflection, not therapy. If you are thinking about harming yourself, reach a person now. In the US, call or text 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline), or text HOME to 741741 (Crisis Text Line).
Questions people ask
Is change part of shadow work?
The resistance to it is. What you cling to past its usefulness, and what you refuse to let end, is shadow material. The Crossing theme in Soul Arc is built for transitions.
I did not choose this change. Do these prompts still apply?
Especially then. Unchosen change leaves the most unmourned endings. Start with the prompt about who you were before the last thing that broke you.
What if I do not know who I am becoming?
That is the normal state in the middle of a crossing. Write about what is ending and what you want to bring forward. The rest arrives later, and not on a schedule.
Which archetype in Soul Arc carries The Crossing?
The Alchemist. If the quiz places you there, the first of your 3 daily prompts on the free plan comes from this theme. Its light and shadow traits are on its own page.
